At CBIS, we utilize a disciplined approach to socially responsible investing (SRI) in order to integrate Catholic social teachings into the investment process. We aspire to serve Catholic organizations seeking, as we do, to unify faith and finance. We believe that it is possible for Catholic institutions to invest in a manner that is consistent with their mission and with the teachings of the Catholic Church, while earning competitive returns. Our socially responsible investment program includes both principled purchasing decisions and active ownership strategies. Our focus is not exclusively on screening companies from our investment portfolios (although we do exclude some) but on engaging the companies we invest in to become better corporate citizens. We follow a multi-strategy approach – stock screening, proxy voting, corporate dialogues and shareholder resolutions – that we believe mitigates risk and minimizes the potential impact of SRI on investment management and performance. To further our active ownership efforts, we also work closely with the larger SRI community, a network composed of hundreds of other socially responsible investors. Together, over time, we believe we have achieved significant progress with many companies. Indeed, our collaboration with other faith-based investors has allowed us to leverage our influence to promote progress and change. |
