CBIS Board of Directors' Mission

The Board of Directors was established to guide the incorporation of Catholic ethics and values into each of the investment programs that CBIS offers to Catholic organizations.

The Board's leadership and firm commitment to faith-based investing has greatly contributed to the strong performance of Christian Brothers Investment Services, Inc.

Michael W. O'Hern

Michael W. O'Hern, FSC

Since joining CBIS in 1987 as Executive Vice President, Brother Michael O’Hern has significantly contributed to its growth and success. As President and CEO, he is responsible for the mission of CBIS, its services and organizational development. Throughout his years at CBIS, Brother Michael’s leadership skills, his strategic insights and vision have enhanced CBIS’ effectiveness and greatly contributed to our success as a unique provider of superior, socially responsible investment programs to the Catholic institutional market. His experience as a school system administrator in the Archdiocese of Chicago provided him with an understanding of the investment needs and unique challenges facing Catholic religious organizations. Brother Michael graduated from Lewis University with a B.A. in 1969. He also holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Administration from Northwestern University and an M.A. in History from Michigan State University. His FINRA registrations include series 7, 24, 63, and 65.

Kathleen M. Almaney

Kathleen M. Almaney

Kathy Almaney has served as a member of the CBIS Board of Directors since February, 2004. She is the founder and president of Almaney Consulting, a provider of human resources and general management consulting services to corporate and not-for-profit clients. Prior to founding Almaney Consulting in 2002, Ms. Almaney worked at Northern Trust Company in Chicago for almost 23 years, most recently as a Senior Vice President of Human Resources. She was a manager for over 20 of her 23 years with Northern Trust, and her experience covered recruiting, employee relations, training, EEO, diversity, compensation and management consulting. Before joining Northern Trust, she was a teacher and a Director of Religious Education at several Catholic schools and parishes. Ms. Almaney holds a B.A. from Siena Heights College (now University) in Adrian, Michigan, and a Masters in Religious Education from Loyola University, Chicago. Ms. Almaney also serves as a director for Christian Brothers Services, a Trustee for the Camilla Madden Charitable Trust (of the Adrian Dominicans) and is on the Board of Catholic Charities of Chicago and Chair of its Benefits/HR Committee.

Brother Timothy Froehlich, FSC

Kathleen M. Flanagan

Kathleen Flanagan brings more than two decades of experience to the CBIS board, which she joined in 2008. Currently, as President of Leadership Communication Inc., she is an executive consultant in leadership communication, specializing in shared leadership and decision making. She helps corporate executives, leadership teams and boards produce change, set direction, generate good decisions, inspire action and achieve success through communication and interaction. As Senior Vice President of Nuveen Investments, she was responsible for marketing communications for new product campaigns that raised $25 billion in assets in closed-end funds. Later, she was responsible for fund board development, managing relationships with the outside directors who annually approved the contracts that generated a substantial portion of Nuveen's revenue. In this capacity, she developed board presentations and strategic reviews for the family of Nuveen funds. She had significant responsibility for managing the operational and financial reviews required to meet SEC and fund governance requirements. Ms. Flanagan received her Bachelor of Science degree in Humanities magna cum laude from Loyola University and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago. She later attended the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program and did additional studies at the Loyola Center for Organization Development. She is currently working on a book about the post-Vatican II renewal of Catholic sisters, focusing on the School Sisters of St. Francis who taught at Madonna High School (Aurora, Illinois) in 1965.

Brother Timothy Froehlich, FSC

Brother Timothy Froehlich, FSC

Brother Timothy Froehlich has served on the CBIS Board of Directors since February of 1996. A member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers since 1982, Brother Timothy is director of finance for the Baltimore Province, a position he has held since 1994. From 1991 to 1994 he worked as an investment consultant for Christian Brothers Investment Services, Inc. He served on the investment committee of the Marist Brothers (NJ), and currently serves on the investment committee of the Sisters of St. Joseph (Baden, PA). Brother Timothy also serves on a number of boards and committees of various Lasallian apostolates within and outside the Baltimore Province, and recently accepted a position on the board of the National Association of Treasures for Religious Institutes (NATRI). He is an ex-officio member of the Baltimore Province District Council and serves as chair of its finance committee. Brother Froehlich is a 1978 graduate of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, where he obtained an undergraduate degree in business administration with a major in management and a minor in sociology. He also obtained a master’s degree in theology from La Salle University, Philadelphia, in 1990, and a teaching certificate in accounting from St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia.

Brother Timothy Froehlich, FSC

Ms. Nola Kulig, CFA

Nola Kulig brings over twenty years experience in the investment industry to the CBIS board, which she joined in 2009 after serving on its investment committee beginning in 2006. She is the founder of Kulig Consulting, LLC, an investment consulting firm to high net worth families. Prior to founding Kulig Consulting in 2008, she was part of the senior management of Blue Heron Consulting, LLC, a management consulting firm to investment managers on organizational effectiveness, investment process issues, product positioning and maximizing investment performance. With her partner there, she consulted on roughly $1 trillion in assets. Before joining Blue Heron in 2000, she was a senior member of Russell Investment Group’s management, most recently as portfolio manager with direct responsibility for $3 billion of assets under management. Ms. Kulig also served as a bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department early in her career. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a Certified Financial Planner candidate and is a member of the CFA Institute and its local Hartford and Seattle chapters. Ms. Kulig graduated cum laude from Whitman College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and was Phi Beta Kappa. She also serves as an Overseer of Whitman College.

Brother Joseph Saurbier, FSC

Brother Joseph Saurbier is the chief financial officer and director of finance for Christian Brothers of the Midwest, and has served on the CBIS Board of Directors since 1990. Brother Saurbier's professional career has placed him in a number of prestigious positions, including assistant provincial and director of education for Christian Brothers from 1990 to 1995, and the principal of De La Salle Institute from 1984 to 1990. Brother Saurbier is Chairman of the Board of Christian Brothers Services and sits on the boards of Christian Brothers College High School in Missouri, and Montini Catholic High School and Saint Joseph High School, both in Illinois. Brother Saurbier received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Lewis College in 1972, a master's of business administration from Lewis University in 1979, and a master of education degree from De Paul University in 1990.

Brother Damian Steger, FSC

Brother Damian Steger, FSC

Brother Damian Steger has been a board member since 1992, was chairman from 1997 - 2003, and is the CEO of Saint Mary's Press-Christian Brothers Publications. Since joining Saint Mary's Press in 1958, he has held several positions including a twenty-seven year tenure as its president. Brother Steger also serves on the board of trustees and on the finance committee for Lewis University in Illinois, and on the Christian Brothers Midwest District finance committee. Brother Steger received his B.A. in business and his M.A. in management from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.

Steve Taylor

Steve Taylor

Mr. Taylor has been a Board Member at CBIS since 1999. He has chaired CBIS’ Audit Committee for the last three years. Mr. Taylor is a CPA with 25 years of experience including audit and tax work with an international CPA firm and has private industry experience in the areas of accounting, finance, and investments. He is currently the CFO of a large nonprofit organization with multiple locations on the west coast of the United States. He has served on numerous nonprofit Boards and Committees in both regional and international settings. Mr. Taylor is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Washington State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Taylor has an MBA from Golden Gate University.

Brother Peter Tripp, FSC

Brother Peter Tripp returned for a second term on the CBIS Board of Directors in 2007. As a member of the New Orleans-Santa Fe Province of the De la Salle Christian Brothers, he served in teaching, counseling, educational administrative and financial management positions in schools in Louisiana and New York. In recent years, Brother Tripp has broadened his ministry by serving as a pastoral minister at a youth retreat center in England where he worked on the Senior program team. A student of Mathematics and Philosophy, he received his initial degree from the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico. His Masters degree in Counselor Education comes from studies completed at University of New Orleans. Brother Tripp has been part of the business administration program at Loyola University in New Orleans and augmented his studies at Tulane University and Pace University, focusing on accounting, economics, and investments. His experience on Catholic school boards, charitable trusts, and provincial finance committees, as well as top management posts in school finance and administration, has made him especially familiar with the financial challenges facing religious and educational organizations. Presently, Brother Tripp is engaged in ministry as a school counselor at St. Paul's School in Covington, LA, and is frequently tapped as an adviser to provincial administration on finances.
